Is there a database anywhere for the Karmann chassis numbers on the 914?
Thanks |

Not that I'm aware of, buz914.
However, you can decode it for the build date of your 914 - Get the "Build Year" using your VIN sticker or other known build year documentation (COA, Window Sticker, New Car Dealer Invoice, etc.) - then get a calendar from that year & start counting weeks from Jan 1 - even if it's the only day in that week (i.e.: Jan 1 Saturday) - using the info above. Note that a 74 could've been built in either (July?) Aug-Dec 73 or Jan - June 74, but yours is pretty early VIN # at 01589 - so probably built around Aug-Sept 73 -ish. Also note that neither the VIN nor chassis no. build date are exact (if so, then my 73 was built in ONE day on 8/31/72). Also in the chart above - 95 is the full Karmann Plant ID, but they would change the 5 to a 6, 7, or 8 etc. - with the (X) - 5 being the 100's digit for the production number that day - e.g.: 6 = 100, 7 = 200, & 5 = 0, etc. Cheers!
