When I removed mine, the old dry glue was left behind. Between a sharp scraper and single edged razor blade, most of it came off. I used laquer thinner which will dissolve the paint, though slowly, so I never ended up going through the primer.

wire wheel and a grinder works well, but you'll loose a little paint here and there. MEK works pretty well, soak a rag with it and go to town. Wear gloves and well ventilated area.

Heatgun Damnit, Heatgun! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/boldblue.gif)

Just come over and get it. Once the pad is off you can use the gun to get the tar off as well, 15min tops! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

brake cleaner worked great. I sat on an upside down bucket in the engine bay with a can of brake cleaner in one hand, and a wire brush in the other.

Noise-wise, it's pretty loud. I don't really mind when I'm driving by myself, but the noise is definitely noticable when you have a passenger. You'll all of a sudden notice how loud your music is turned up, or how your throat hurts from hollering at your co-pilot.

mine is going back on, or at least something if not the original stuff...I'm also thinking of adding some to the trunk wall and making up some removable panels that'll fit over the relay board side and the battery side, they'll start at the engine tin and go up to the engine lid

Yep. Just be careful... when you drink too much of the alcohol you gotta be more careful with the heat gun. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer3.gif)

It'll make a pretty good difference in sound... yeah, good... I like it!

When I get too old and it's too loud, I'll think about something like a paint-on bedliner on both sides of the firewall instead of a glued or fastened pad.

(carbs, free flow exhaust, solid trans mounts)

i will try something under the backpad instead..... i want the bare firewall look (with harness eyebolts and washers)

Bill - lets do it! i can do your brakes, you can do my tar! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

If it's 3M Trim Adhesive, 3m also makes a "Trim Adhesive Release Agent" that will turn the glue into a goo that wipes right off.

Early cars didn't even have a sound pad back there, so it can't be THAT bad. That's why early cars sometimes have less firewall rust. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) Mine won't be going back on, but I'll put something on the inside.
