I'm putting a 1980 3.0L engine in a 914. There is a 3 prong plug for the voltage regulator on the engine harness. Can I just plug in the regulator from the old 4 cylinder relay board or use a generic solid state type? I am not using the relay board from the 4.
Thanks, Ed |

Good Q (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
I have asked the same questions and situation ( (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) minus the 3.0L) and what I was told by the board was it will/might/don't know. A vendor (GPR) told me to just use the 4 cyl since a VR is a VR is a VR. My engine will be running in a week or so, I will let you know how it turns out. |

You might want to check if the 6 alternator has an internal regulator in it already my 79 did. Otherwise the four should work fine.

Besides the B+ and ground you need three other wires with an external regulator...don't see them in the pic

Ed, the engine has the factory wiring harness on it. There is a plug, 3 prong, for the regulator. Are those the wires you are referring to? Or are there suppossed to be more wires on the back of the alternator?

IIRC
The fat red wires go to the starter. The other three (3- wires) go to the VR Cheers (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif) I ws looking at your photo and have a question (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) Is the wire to the brushes just wrapped around the spade connector (Missing the female connector)? |

I put a connector on it, when the engine arrived it didn't have one. Good eye (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Ed |
