no CV joint tool....dont know what i'm talking about. BUT they have starred ratchet socket things, but i cant find in the specs under transmission or rear driveshaft sections of my haynes where it mentions bolt size.....
somebody please help me out here meanwhile, i'll look in 914 info |

Do you have a VW shop or something? Thats where I got mine. A VW dealer might even have one. I don't know the size off hand, but I believe its a 12 point.

No, its a torx style, but it has 12 points instead of 6. So the tool has 12 points on it. I think its 12, anyway. I'll count mine in a bit, just to make sure.

VW triple-square CW joint tool. They probably have them hanging on the rack.
Oh, make sure you actually have the OEM triple-square CV joint bolts... so many have been replaced with regular allen-head bolts. |

the kid gave me a wierd look when i asked him...so its a squarish end instead of the torx end?? I got the jeep to drive over there, so i wont have to limp on 2.5 cylinders in my porsche to get there and back.

good thinking, just pull the boot back to have a looksy? yup good work....assuming that there is a disernable difference between the allen head bolt and the triple-point VW OEM bolt, I would say I have allen head.... |

yep! and if they REALLY don't have it, you may be able to get them out with vise-grips... then replace them with allen heads when you put them back in... but you will still need the tool soon, there are more of those type bolts on the engine shroud(impeller)... I replaced those with allen head bolts too... |

I got the correct tool from kregans. 8 or 10 mm 12 star tool. came with a a set of 4 different sizes for about $15. Had to use it to remove my engine fan today

Make sure you look really close. It looked to me like a regular allen head as well, but it's not, and you can bugger it up trying to use an allen wrench on it. Just to clarify, it's very similar to a torx, it just has 12 points. Just make sure you know what you have before you start trying to loosen them.

mine "LOOKS" like a allen head.....7mm i believe, unless its SAE.....then i'm in a hole....my 6 almost fits....i dont want to strip it out though....vice-grips you say? anybody got pics so i can compare?

You are truly amazing... read this
TRIPLE SQUARE - think about it - like a Star of David is a double triangle. NOT the same as a Torx or Allen head. Allen head is 6 points, triple square is 12 points. Clean out one of the bolt heads and be certain of what you have. Then... get the right tool! If you try to use pliers or vice grips you might get them all out, but you'll be pissed off. |

You need to STOP asking your FLAPS for ANYTHING! They have pointed you in the wrong direction SO many times...
I bought mine from the Mac-Tools truck at the garage across from my office. I saw him there, ran over, paid $29 and had the tool... I know...$29 is high, but it's 4" long, and las a lifetime warrenty... If you do use the proper tool...
Spray the head out with brake cleaner and put the tool in and give it a tap with a mallet to ensure it is well seated. |

NAPA carries them. The 928 uses a larger triple square on the flywheel bolts. NAPA had it in stock! Could have knocked me over with a feather. BTW the counter man didn't know what it was for but he found it on a carousel of specialty tools they have on display.
