Yes, that part is what makes it a side-shifter.
A '71 would have had a tail-shifter to begin with, but it could have been converted to side-shift (using this and a bunch of other parts).. or a side-shifter tranny may have been swapped in along the way. |

Do you have the correct shift rod, and engine bar (easy to tell pieces)? Its a good upgrade and a nice find on a older car if you didnt know.
Man that thing is dirty. |

Good morning Doc, this car had a complete sideshifter set up so I have a full spare at this point, my 914/6 also has one so I've got plenty of bits now.
It looks like this donor car had a pretty significant transmission oil leak that was never addressed so it accumulated a lot of dirt over the years he |

Check out AutoAtlanta.com. Dr 914 has almost all of the exploded view drawings with links to part #s and dimensions. go to the transmission section, maybe one about levers etc....
but you will easily see the difference between an early tail shifter and a later side shifter. Side shifter required a different motor mount bracket (bar) too. Great source to see and learn the differences, how many washers to use, direction of bolts, all kinds of important stuff on the whole car |

Why are you changing it out? I have (to my surprise) a 72 with the tail shifter. I had always heard the tail shifter was garbage, but I'm rethinking that now. It is every bit as good as the side shift on my 75. I think it's a little more complicated, but I've been impressed as is work very well. Perhaps it's a matter of it being a little more difficult to get adjusted correctly?
If you do change out ask Bruce Stone (BDStone) as I know he had kits put together to do the conversion. I have some of the pieces you need (bushings and such). The only think other than stock you will need is a fire wall bushing that fits the early and has the ID for the late rod (which I have also if you need it). As far as adjustment you may want to try this 1st - Attached image(s) |

I'll try to make that more clear going forward. |
