Working on my transmission now and I lack the expertise to know if parts (syncros, slider, and dog teeth) are still serviceable.

Just wondering if everyone just replaces everything while they're in there. I know it's expensive, but is it worth the cost just to ensure I don't put bad parts back in?

I found AutohauzAZ to have some of the best prices. Does anyone have a better parts supplier recommendation?

You should search posts from DrEvill on this forum who is the resident expert on transmission rebuilds.

From what I've read from him, he only replaces what is needed and for example he will flip the synchro rings to keep the price down.

He sells a video explaining the process and also does transmission rebuild clinics once in a while.

Back to your question, replacing all the parts is probably not necessary, if it were most of us will advise you to get a second hand good transmission.

Finally Autohausaz has competitive pricing and good service. I don't think you'll find much better.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Buy Dr Evil's video, then dig in.
4-5 synchro/slider are less prone to wear. If you have a good spare gearbox, you will be able to combine and save. Dog teeth and synchros are interchangeable, so is 2-3 and 4-5 slider.
1st gear slider is usually beat and you will probably need to get a new one.
Fun project (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif)

BTW dont trust their Website (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) I also was doing some trans work, attempted to order some stuff & got a polite letter back from "Mike" at customer service saying so sorry we dont have ANY of what you ordered, & you should thank us for canceling your order. I do have Dr. Evil's video.

Problem I'm having is accessing the wear limit of the part.

I was just wondering if others were experiencing the same and just went ahead and replaced all the parts.

I guess that's why his clinics are so useful.

I would take the gear stack to someone who knows transmissions. It should save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

My transmission internals were evaluated once the case was opened. It required a main bearing, 1st reverse slider, 1st gear teeth and all 5 synchros. 1st/reverse slider and all synchros are available from Porsche direct. Other Genuine NOS parts are out there as well if you want to go in that direction.

The Doc is pretty good about answering questions. You might take pics and post them for comment if you are wondering if parts are usable.

BTW, the two ball bearings in the intermediate plate pretty much always fall apart when you take the two shafts out. And they're bleeding expensive. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Thanks for the positive vibes, guys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

There are a few options.

1) replace everything, best, $$$$. I do sell new parts as well and can meet or beat competitor prices. I also have a good stock of many used parts that will save $$.

2) Replace only the parts needing it. Saves money, but of course some parts will wear out at a later date and you will eventually have to go in and change them. This is inevitable, though. Scale your budget/driving miles per year/time to make a decision on this.

3) Send me the stack and Ill assess and replaced. This is fast and easy on my end as I can get it done in a weekend. This is the only service I am currently offering as I am tied up getting a house ready to sell. Shipping is way less, too. Contact me for more on this option.

4) Send me your consumables and I will inspect them and let you know report and pricing options for what needs replaced. Id do inspection for free (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dr. Evil:

Probably take you up on option 4; it'll probably be a week or 2 before I get everything taken apart.

I did take some parts to a local VW shop and although he said some parts looked good, he would replace everything. I don't think the mechanic was trying to sell me parts, but just giving his honest opinion. That was what spurred me to write the initial post.

I bet you can spend $3-5K, just replacing everything. Since most of these boxes ran on low power engines, full replacement isn't always needed.

Another data point.
I did replace everything....likely the most you could do.
Converted to side shifter, 904 mainshaft, all new close ratio gears, 930 LSD, synchros, bearings, seals etc.
901 gearbox will handle +300hp.
I know this is the far end of the spectrum.
Parts alone were about $9k.
Final tab up to your imagination. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I was just working on a pair of boxes & scavenging parts from another pair. All were for for most part complete but just removed & stored...of the 4 three were missing the little blocks on the throwout bearing, the other had only one!
Is this typical? Do they disintegrate?
I need some~

Very common. Many forget to put them in.
