How much would you expect to pay for an original 914-6 engine that is in need of a rebuild? I have the engine serial number code... where can one verify that it's an actual original 6 from a 914?

That link tells you how to ID a six motor.

Price - depends on condition and completeness. Completeness includes things like carbs, exhaust, sheet metal, shroud, alternator, carb linkages etc. A decent core long block might be had for as low as $1500 with a decent complete core motor going for maybe as much as $5000.00

Things like Weber carbs go for $2500 - $3500 alone.
