Don’t know where I got it, but about 10 years ago I bought a cable release mechanism after much frustration with the electric release. I ran the cable from the crossmember through the engine compartment and alongside the trunk edge to the lock. Worked every time.

I’ll try to take some pics tomorrow and will post them.

Those look exactly like what I was trying to accomplish here. Looks like you may have gotten the "Engmann" kit I refer to at the beginning of this. Unfortunately he passed a while back so the kits are of course not available anymore. Hopefully Rich will be able to make a few for anyone interested.

I welded in some large brake tubing from just below the motor cover release by the driver seat to behind the latch which I will run a cable through.
I made one release lever so far and will see how it works out.
I will have an emergency release installed also.
