I installed my RennShifter last night (& wrapped up this a.m. - didn't have a 7/32'nd hex). Very nice product and the installation was super simple, at least if you've ever played with the shifter assy before. Plus my car has no interior or console or passenger seat so the access is fantastic.

Anyways, the only small glitch is that there's a bit of interference with the clutch tube on the left side of the tunnel when going for 4th or 5th gear. I can get it in gear OK but it's definitely making a little contact.

What's the preferred way to push/bend the tube for clearance? I don't want to kink or break it, obviously. Can I just kinda pry on it with a screwdriver or something? Or would it be better to try to clamp it out of the way with an adel clamp kind of thing?

I had the same problem. I used some metal 1/2" electrical cable clamps and clamped the clutch tube to the bottom of the tunnel in two locations. One location was forward and to the left of the shift of the shifter and one behind and to the right of the shifter. I used #14 sheet metal screws to hold the clamps on the tube. You might also want to make sure the driver's side seat belt or harness mounting bolt isn't interfering with the shift rod action (use a mirror to look down the tunnel).

I dont think thats a glitch, I think its part of the shorter shift throws, it needs a longer throw on the bottom for a shorter throw at the top (if that makes any sense). Therefore it will have less clearence inside the tube... I am going to run into that problem installing my short shift shifter.. I'll be getting a rennshift once my budget allows.

You're right, it's not unique to this shifter -- and James mentions the possibility in the instructions (which are very good BTW). I had the same issue with the Weltmeister/Perf Prods short shift that was in the car when I bought it. I removed that one and have been running a stock shifter, until yesterday.

Thanks for the confirmation about the clamps Kevin. I figured that might work and it's always good to hear from somebody else who tried it, first.

I had a similar issue. I couldn't get the tube out of the way so a made a 3mm thick spacer that sits under the shift unit and spaces it up so that it clears the tube. The shifter makes it far more civilized to drive. I also fabricated a new shift lever because I sit on the other side of the car and the shift was too far away. In the end it turned out great.

I tried the 1/2" adel clamp trick and it seems to have made a big diff. I can get 4th and 5th without obvious interference now, but there may still be a little scraping/contact. As long as the clamp holds, it should be fine.

Wifey had to work tonite so I'm on daddy-duty and couldn't take it out for a drive yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Is the Rennshifter adjustable for late/early car, since the shaft rotation is "backwards" for a tailshifter?

Sorry I missed this topic guys - had a big pool/yard game party at the house this weekend and I was a little busy/frazzled/worn out!

The clutch tubes are different in a lot of these cars - since so many have been broken and repaired and they always end up in different places.

When I have needed to move the tube, I pulled out the heater lever and pried on the tube through that hole with a large screwdriver. The tube is quite malleable, so it doesn't take much force. The clamp is a good idea.

Howard, I wish you had mentioned that yours was RHD, I could have put the shifter together backwards for you so the stick offset was on the other side. I'm glad you got it worked out. That is the beauty of the bolt-on steel stick, anyone can get steel welded for cheap and modify the stick for their preference.

James- there are two different shifters for tail vs sideshift. I tailor the shifter to the exact application - prefered shift throw, tail or side shift, hand throttle slot or not, etc.

Yep James, that's exactly what I did -- pried it leftwards thru the defrost lever opening, and then clamped the sucker down as far left as I could get it.

STILL no test drive though...arghh...maybe I'll get home from work early enough tonite.

James,

It wasn't a big deal, I just got some 17 mm tube with a 3 mm wall and fabbed a new one. I actually had to make it a bit longer but with 20% throw reduction its still a lot shorter in the throw than standard. In any case I would not expect you to know how to do the lever unless you have sat on the right. Now that I have it adjusteded its great.
