And to answer the question about "why," IIRC it is because when the engine is cold, the auxiliary air valve is open to let more air in and idle the engine faster. After it warms up, the valve closes and the idle settles to what you want it set to. It has been decades since I've messed with D-jetronic so I'm sure someone can verify or correct this.
