Bake upgrade?? Options

I have a set of custom 4 bolt wheels I really like but I want better brakes. What is the best setup to run/where do I get it? Duh I mean BRAKE upgrade

You have to define first what you want in "better brakes". Most people slag off the stock system simply because it's stock, not because they've actually had any problems with it.

Do you want less pedal effort? Do you NEED more fade resistance? Have you actually had your brakes fade? Have you ever rebuilt your stock brakes?

If you want big vented rotors and four-piston calipers for the trick factor, then lay out the list of what bling factor you want, and ask about that specifically.

good pads. fresh fluid. new OEM hoses.

maybe new rotors if yours are nearing the wear limit; this will mean new bearings up front, which is also good.

unless you have a huge power increase, or you can't lock the brakes, or you actively and aggressively track the car, that will be all you need.

you can spend as much as you want, but plus or minus a little, if you can lock the wheels, you have all the brake you need...

in the picture above, you'll see some new 7075 billet aluminum hubs that are for sale in the 'club store.

These go right onto your stock /4 struts ('73-'76),these allow you to bolt on 911 vented rotors and use 911 front calipers.

A few people are using this setup with Volvo calipers, as for the rotors in the picture, those are mine, 12.20" diameter vented Wilwood rotors with an aluminum hat, I will be using aluminum turbo RX-7 calipers.

rotors: 35 to 40 each
hats: 120 each (I'm sure I can have them made much, much cheaper for qty's)

full floating? no, more money and I've never used or dealt with them before..

I have not weighed this setup, but I'd have to say yes, it's lighter even with the 4 piston caliper........

You also need to think about the rear brakes. With a V8 esp, you're going to have enough rear weight bias that more rear brakes would be a good idea. Apparently, spacers are available (ask Eric Shea) for the stock rear calipers to run with vented rotors. Which rotors is another matter, but perhaps redrilled Carrera rotors will work?

If you're going with front calipers with more piston area, you'll need different rear calipers, too, or you'll end up with a front-biased brake system, anyway. The trouble here is the parking brake. Some people advocate a separate cable-operated caliper (Wilwood has 'em). Some like the 911 setup (but that's only 5-lug).

Question: can you put spacers in the stock FRONT calipers for vented rotors? If so, this seems to me to be a good stab at a setup, as brake balance will be the same as stock, but you'll have more heat capacity with vented rotors all round.

no change in offset, I am running BBS Racing studs with 1.125" spacers on mine:

shown with rusty 911 rotor for mock up...I still need to remove some material from the spacer to lighten it up some.

Please stay away from Mike Mueller's rusty rotors. No matter how cheap he offers them to you, you should not be bolting on rusty parts!
