Took my exhaust off yesterday and one of the exhaust manifold studs unscrewed with the nut attached. The threads are good, so I shouldn't have a problem putting it back in. So my question is whether or not I should put some thread sealer on the stud when I screw it back in, and if so, should I use something like Locktite blue strong or red permanent thread sealer. I'm thinking the heat may make using thread sealer a mute point, so I'm asking the Brain Trust of the World for advice.
Thanks, Mike |

Most thread lockers will just burn off with a few exceptions that loc-tite makes and you don't want to use them in aluminum.
Are you using a locking nut or a nut with a lock washer? If it's a locking nut you may want to switch to a nut and lock washer to avoid this. If the stud coming out doesn't hurt anything toss a little anti-seize on it to make sure it doesn't bugger up the threads going in or out and just make sure it's tight when reinstalled. |

That's what I was thinking, none of the thread lockers would hold up to the heat. I have the copper nuts which seem to work well overall. I'd prefer if the nut would come off rather than the stud unscrewing, as I don't want to bugger up the threads in the aluminum head and have to go the time-sert or heliocoil route. Thanks for your advice. |

The copper lock nuts are great at pulling exhaust studs and never letting go. I have had to replace almost every stud I ever attempted to install them on. I wouldn't use them again if you paid me to!
These are my new go to for exhaust nuts: http://vwparts.aircooled.net/ACN-Flanged-R...-p/acn-nuts.htm Having the extra space is REALLY nice to keep your socket from jamming against the pipes and the 13mm flange is nice for multiple reasons. Was so happy when i found these. |

I used the copper plated nuts with antiseize on threads. No problems with removal on a tracked 6 cylinder.

Get a replacement stud. Not that long ago Len Hoffman noted not to use the copper nuts and simply double nut the stud and use a anti-seize product.
