Got my new accelerator cable today but am stumped on how to attach it to the carbs. Do I need to cutoff the existing ferrule on the cable when using carbs? There seems to be no way to get it through to the set screw otherwise.

The stock cable worked on mine. It went straight into the cross-pin. Not sure what that extra piece is that you show currently stuck into the cross-pin, I think it just needs to be removed.

I think your're right, but the set screw to remove the extra piece (old ferrule?) is completely rounded out. Also, if I did get it removed, I still would not be able to pass the cable through the next piece (the cylinder with the set screw) unless there is not ferrule. Very odd setup by previous owner.
I'm thinking of leaving it as is, snipping the ferrule off of my new cable and running the cable through the cylinder piece and calling it a day. I've been recommending the CSP center pull bell crank linkage, which is far superior to any cross bar, and not too expensive.

A cross bar set up isn't that bad if it's set up correctly.
Every set up has play in it, if you take the time to make sure everything is tight and aligned correctly it will work just fine. After looking at my parts car that has the same linkage as your car the ferrule on the end of the cable is intact and held into the linkage. I'll snap a few pics in a sec. |

I'd like to stick with what I have because it has worked great so far. I pulled the engine a couple weeks ago and disconnected everything except the accelerator cable. snap! Doh! The funky looking thing that was attached to the end of your old cable is just an extender, ditch that and if you need a new barrel clamp pick some up from your FLAPS. Here's one from Air-cooled.net

Thanks guys. I think what I am seeing is the old extender still connected to the linkage with the stripped out set screw. I'm just going to clip off the new extender and run the cable though the barrel adjuster and clamp it down. The new cable will not fit through the barrel with the extender on it. (or by running it the opposite way due to the plastic cable housing.)
