Hi All,

Looking at this 914 - is the goop between the dash top and the windshield the result of a sloppy windshield installation and if so, could that be trimmed/pushed around to clean it up a little bit?

Also - does that look like a plastic dash cover?

Thanks!
Brian

It does look like goo splooging through.

Yes, I think that is a topper.

Yes it looks like a dash cover. The picture isn’t great but it’s looks like a not great windshield install. You can pull out the rubber seal and clean the mess then replace the seal with one from 914rubber. It will be a messy no fun project. The problem with reinstalling the windshield is removing it without breaking it.

Dash covers are hard plastic. If you can make a dent with your fingernail, it’s vinyl. You can also feel the hard edge at the ashtray and at the top of the gauges.

I'm familiar with the plastic nature of a dash topper I'm just not physically with the car - and I think it does look like this is one. usually around the ashtray is the dead giveaway.

jdamiano - thanks for the tip on pulling the seal. I'd be down for that - but not for pulling the windshield just for this if it's in good shape....

If you decide to pull the seal and it’s the original style make sure you have some picks and a shop vac. Harbor Freight sells some picks that work well. It comes out in a zillion pieces and the metal is a pain to remove. Once it is out and everything is cleaned up the 914rubber one goes in easy. Has to be the 914rubber one. They designed it to be installed with the windshield in.

Cool.
I'm hoping that since the windshield appears to have been replaced (hence, the runaway goop...) a new one is in there and would come out easily....a guy can hope, anyway!

The rubber seal at the bottom of the windshield on the inside looks to be in great shape. That is the one that comes out in a bunch of little pieces if original and you need a pick and vacuum for cleanup. It is easily replaced and I did mine last year. That goop looks like butyl that can be trimmed but will be a pain to get a knife down there to trim up.

Looks like it was installed with the seal in and too much goop.
If it's one of mine it will come right out and can be cleaned to reuse. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Judging by how uniform it is and there are no cracks Id say it probably is.
