This falls under the category of I hate previous owners: (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chair.gif)

I knew coming into this vehicle that it was not well taken care of and has issues. That is part of the game with a 45 year old car.

This one appears to have had some real fun in its past life.

AC installed - strike 1
Cooling flaps taken out of the engine for "better cooling" - yeah right like the German's had no idea what they were doing. Strike 2

Yesterday I pulled the engine tin and it turns out Cylinder 3 isn't tapped for Cylinder Head Temp (CHT) sensor. Oh and someone welded up the breather hole. That is probably a sign of worse discoveries ahead. Other side breather was a complete cobble job of thin wall brass tube stuck in the hole and held in with RTV! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

I thought maybe the head with it tapped was put on wrong side. So I pulled the other side tin. Nope - Driver side head not machined or tapped for CHT either.

Now the plot thickens. I pull the valve covers to look at head part number. They do carry the 914 2.0L part number and they are 3 stud heads.

I'm confused.

1) Were all heads drilled for CHT or just passenger side for Cyl#3? I can't remember from my original 914 I had.
2) Are there aftermarket heads that have 914 p/n's but don't drill and tap for CHT?
3) other possibilities I'm missing?

Can add pictures later this morning.

2) Are there aftermarket heads that have 914 p/n's but don't drill and tap for CHT? not at the time this was done. Aftermarket heads won't have VW/audi logos
3) other possibilities I'm missing? the PO replaced the head with a 1/2 side head.

Actually option #3 is my best case scenario. That would be great news. Machining to drill and tap for CHT sensor is very doable.

Thank you so much for responding (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

Now about that welded breather hole . . . what else did they weld . . . to be continued?
