Here’s the car. Immaculately maintained except dust from our shop. Customer is getting a 350hp 3.8 so the 3.0 is for sale. Currently, the engine can be tried out in the car. Soon we will pull it and check the details. Just waiting for a lift to open up.

You know I love my 4 and have dropped some $$ on it. But when I see things like this I have to wonder.

I have more than this in the parts to build my 4. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Head studs are all good. Oil pressure is great. The entire CIS injection was rebuilt with earlier big port cis so there is no lambda. 1982 car and engine.

Attached link is a video of the leak down which is also great.

A core 3.0 that needs a full rebuild and often is just a long block is usually priced at $6-7k. This one has always been well maintained and is ready to drop in a car. 914 or 911.

Mark the leak downs look good!

117k on it

So I have a 3.0 out of an 82. Was running when pulled last November, but needs to be gone through. Do I sell mine and buy this one or rebuild the one I got?

Did the studs check out?

Yea. Studs are good. Everything checks out on this engine and until a couple days ago it was running the car very well. The norm at our shop is a built 3.2 or 3.6 upgrade from a smaller engine. Since these have become high end builds, a built 3.8 with lots of extras is the usual fix. Nothing wrong with this 3.0 and You could be driving in weeks vs rebuild months or longer.

Pelican has a pretty good “engine rebuilder” program that will help you estimate costs. It’s shocking how fast it adds up.

@nditiz1 - rebuild costs get very expensive very quickly. I have a couple threads going on Pelican about this for my 2.7 and I'm likely into it for close to $8 even if I do it all myself.

Now to be fair a 2.7 can presents more challenges than a good 3.0 but until you open it up you never know.

If I was at a different point I'd buy and ship this in a heartbeat rather than rebuilding mine.

Your mileage may vary, but fresh info that I thought was relevant to share.

8k is probably no frills and no big surprises. Just rebuilding the CIS is $1k. Every wur & fd needs restoration after 40 years. That’s probably half the reason this engine runs so well. We have a guy who does the full service on the parts and tests them for proper flow. Unlike our type 4’s, cis will support hotter cams than stock.

Yep - assume all the normal / preventative 2.7 machining but not a “built” motor. A bit more input than stock but that’s about it. Keep in mind that is if I put it back together - a VERY big if.

The nice thing about a running engine is the buyer can be driving this summer instead of looking at a lump in the corner of the garage. It’s going in a 911 so there’s no “conversion” to work out.
