I have this engine number:

Based on my search of 914 engine numbers I seem to be missing a digit (6 vice 7). http://www.bigporsche.com/history914w.htm

I'm pretty sure this is the original 1.7L that came with the car new, but I can't say for sure. Anyone know what engine I have?

I think that the Big Porsche person made the engine number one digit too big! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

My 73 2L is also only 6 digits, & I think that the extra "0" tends not to be used until they got up to that many engines (i.e.: 10,000>).

Our Jeff Bowlsby has a great 914 info site, with this -

Also, p914.com (.net & .org) has good 914 info too.

Tom, Thanks! Geoff, that's what I thought but just wanted to be sure. Much appreciated.
