1. I think you need to find a new (better) mechanic - one who's familiar with 914s.
2. Why did you buy another transaxle unit? I read though you shift problem thread ... did you check and replace all of the shift rod bushings like was recommended? 3a. Who determined that your 915 transaxle was bad? ... 3b. and what was the diagnosis? 3. Sorry to say, you overpaid for a tail shift transaxle. Without knowing for sure what the condition of the internals are, it would be considered a 'core' to rebuild - and should have only cost $150 ~ $300. MAX. 4. DO NOT let your mechanic try to talk you into giving him your 915 transaxle. It's worth way more than what you paid for a that tail shift transaxle. 5. See if you can fine one of our members (local to you) to come and evaluate what's going on with your car. I hate hearing about mechanics taking advantage of people, when your problems may not be as bad as your mechanic say they are. Get a second opinion form someone who has experience working on 914s.
