What is the purpose of the brake shields behind the rotors. Do they provide cooling or what? Are they needed?

From my understanding they also protect the rotors from road debris, such as rocks between the rotors and calipers.

In my oh so humble opinion, they were to keep dirt out and heat in. The brakes work better on the track with them off.
Just an opinion, which like a s... hole, we all have one, and my opinion may be worth what it cost you. I do not have them on my car, and have had no problems with junk getting stuck between the rotor and the caliper. |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) in addition, if you drive the car in snow, they make dandy plows to pack snow between the shield and disk. i pull them on all my cars. i do re-install the mounting hardware to keep dirt and moisture out of the threaded area - you do not want corrosion starting deep within your strut. and the bolt probably provides more strength than the empty hole. |

You don't need them! Unless your OFF-ROADING!
I put them on 'cause they were something else I got to paint 'ORANGE' (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) Attached thumbnail(s) |

I got a nice pair of black powder coated ones for 911 struts with 3.5" caliper spacing for sale.
Found out the hard way that the 944 turbo calipers will not go on with the shields in place. |
