Is there an interchange manual to find out what VW Bus (Type IV engine) parts will work with a 914? I'm trying to get good new parts for Babydoll but since her owner is on a tight budget, I'd like to stretch those dollars as far as I reasonably can. Her PO gave me a heads-up on Bus clutches working fine, but are there any other Bus parts that will fit and work properly? Surely somebody must have gone through this exercise in the past. Thanks...

Bus clutches DO NOT work fine, other than the disc, and only if you buy the 215mm one, fitting only a couple of years. If you buy the kit, you throw away 2 of the 4 pieces, keeping the disc and pilot bearing. Many internal engine parts are the same. 2.0 bus pistons are lower compression, the heads are different, the cams are hydraulic; lifters/pushrods/rockers are too, and the valves are different. Oil pump, nuts and bolts, gaskets and seals, etc., are the same. Flywheel is cut differently, crank and rods, as well as bearings, are the same. Pilot bearing is installed in the crank, but it doesn't matter. Fan is the same, but it's marked differently. The case is different, but can be used. Cooler and filter are the same, none of the EFI will fit, runners and plenum are different. Prices of all the parts used on a 914 that are the same are gonna be the same anywhere. Even Porsche charges basically the same price as VW for the common parts, but you really don't want to shop at the dealer anyway, right? The Cap'n

Does that mean that a Bus throwout bearing won't work?
OK... I guess I'm going to have to break down and buy a proper pressure plate from a normal Porsche parts supplier. We got the old one off last weekend, and the fingers show noticeable wear, and the disc inside also has noticeable wear at the point where the clutch disc rode on it. I refuse to put a piece that looks like that back on the car. I'm not a professional mechanic, but I do consider my reputation as a "car guy" who knows what he's doing to be at stake here. The motor is fresh; just pulled the spark plugs and they looked good, but the fuel injection hose is all wrong (5/16" = 7.93 mm)... spec is 7 mm hose... no wonder my friend has been complaining of fuel leaks. |

and while you're at it, make sure you get the correct FI hose-clamps on all the fuel-hoses. they're not that expensive and any good VW shop will have them. a burned out 914 is not a pretty sight ... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Andy |

Other than attaching to the release arm differently, having a different point of contact on the pressure plate, and a different contact surface, it'll work. That's sarcasm! No, it won't work. Just look at it! The Cap'n

Got the clamps covered. It already has the good clamps in most places, but I'm replacing all clamps with new pieces. Actually, as far as fuel is concerned, I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to replace the plastic lines. I've seen the thread here with the nice fabricated steel lines, but that's a budget buster for the moment... there has to be a cheap, safe way to do fuel lines, riiight? |

Cap'n, I don't even know what a Bus pressure plate looks like. I'm dealing with part numbers on websites.
At least I figured out that my old Vette pressure plate wouldn't fit... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) |

The Cap'n is correct. You might as well buy the correct parts. The common parts will be priced the same anyways. Different parts are useless.
That would be a DAPO correct? |

Naah, I wouldn't go that far. He did specifically say that the clutch disc would interchange. |

Good, then perhaps you won't be in for too many surprises.
I had a 411 for many years. Not too many interchangeable parts. The stock 411 clutch was not up to a 2.0 914 engine though; broke the new PP after a while. Worked for a VW dealer in the parts dept once. Basically all the cross-over parts are normal VW parts at normal VW prices. |

LOL.
Thanks for bearing with me, guys. I come from the world of Corvettes, where a small block is a small block is a small block, everything interchanges, and my FLAPS, Summit Racing, and Ace Hardware are my friends. (Actually, the local Ace has a pretty good selection of metric 8.8 fasteners too.) |

I didn't catch the link to the fuel lines (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)
All the fuel lines, like the ones in the chassis? or just the ones after the pump? |

Thanks! I'll look it up. I'd feel so much better knowing that Babydoll won't be riding around with 30 year old fuel lines.

you can tell which parts cross over mostly by the part number. basically, 022.xxx.xxx is a 1.7 liter, 021.xxx.xxx is a 1.8 L and 039.xxx.xxx is a 2.0 L. 025.xxx.xxx is a vanagon (i think). many type 1 parts are 111.xxx.xxx or maybe 113.xxx.xxx. the 1st 3 digits specify the model of car, the next 3 digits specify which section of the car, ie, fuel, suspension, brakes etc all follow a standard numbering identification, the last 3 digits are the part number with odd and even final digit being right and left side (or left and right side) and a letter at the very end for refinements or versions/improvements of the part

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/grouphug.gif) Hey guys,
I just want to thank you all, on behalf of Babydoll and myself, for all the help you're sending out on this clutch problem, as well as the fuel line issues and whatever else we'll run into with this latest engine drop (her 3rd in as many years... sigh...) I just checked out another thread on this site that said, essentially, that there were those who didn't appreciate the "bs" on the site. Hell, what's not to appreciate? You guys are FUN, and you're full of great know-how, and best of all, you love 914's and are willing to share. Thank you!! I was beginning to think I'd have to part with my baby, due to incompetence (I've tried to maintain Babydoll for five years now, but I'm a lousy mechanic - I'm all heart, and thumbs...) Then Zymurgist stepped up to bat - and with you guys behind him, Babydoll will fly down those curving roads again! YESSS! |
