I saw a thread on here somewhere, but of course, I did not bookmark it, or add to it, and I can't find it now....

But I bought a new High Beam Relay or Headlight relay, whatever it is called. It has an extra blade (30 IIRC). On the thread that I can't find, it was noted that the extra post has to be jumped to one of the 4 others.

Truthfully, that is what I can't remember. So does it jump to 56a, S, 56b or 56?

And if anyone can find the thread, please add it here.

I did find this picture of the back of the fuse/relay board under the dash.

I see the extra post. Looks like it is going to the white wire. Not sure what terminal that is, but should be easy enough to figure out.

But I would like confirmation before I burn up the relay doing it wrong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Excellent..... The thread title was misspelled. Maybe that is why I had trouble... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

THis is the missing piece i needed....

"According to Dr Porsche's 914'S,TIPS PAGE 105:
The 4 term headlight relay has neen replaced by a 5 terminal part. To use this new part, plug the four wires in the orig config, red / white to 56, yellow to 56A, yellow / red to S and white/blue to 56B or F and then jump 56 to the new 30"

And I have the TIPS book too. Never would have thought to look there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Why didn't you put a want to buy for and OEM relay. Everybody that has taken a car apart has some. I have never seen one go bad. I am sure there are exceptions though.

I've had several. The 'new' VW ones are so flimsy that I broke one just squeezing it trying to get it into the socket.

If I could find a reliable source of empty relay housings (or EP26 / EP27 flashers) I'd make a batch of the software-controlled one that I designed (*nudge* spoke *nudge*)...

There is a thread on switching over to an electronically controlled dimmer relay from latter model vehicles. I think the sample in the thread was from a Volvo.

I got my original working. But i bought this one to have a spare. So I’ll either soldier a jumper on or put a note in the box for the next owner. I recently bought a bunch of those piggy-back connectors, they should work.

UPDATE for future....

I found this picture and LINK from Wagen Werks.

THey have a good set up for the jumper. Zoom in to see the spade connectors. It looks like they supply the jumper. Not sure it works with the 914, but all the numbers are the same, so look into it.

Based on personal experience (245,000 miles, ~51 years), RARELY = 2 failures of the original relay in that time (first in 2004, and again two weeks ago). Still need to do the post-mortem. I'll try to post pictures if I find anything meaningful.

And my apologies for the misspelling in the title of the 2004 post... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Add me as another data point for a bad high beam relay...

I ordered a new one from NAPA and it came as the 5 pin style. I wouldn't have known what to do without you marvelous and smart people, with your instructions on adding the jumper. Hooked it up and the headlights now work perfectly!
