Ok, now that I got the fan back(nice job Ben!). when I took the fan out I spun the alt to loosen the screws so didn't really see how everything fit in there. can't really find anything online, so what is the proper orientation of the alt and the air diverter? TIA

TIA I may have some pics but need to find them. The diverter needs to send air to #1, 2 & 3 cylinders. Is your alt an ext or int regulated style? If int reg style it only fits one way or it will interfere with the regulator. Let me see if I can find my pics. On my brothers 3.0 with a int reg you can see that it needs to be at the bottom. The diverter also has an opening at the bottom of it so it can only mount one way. The other diverter in the pic is for an ext reg but needs to be clocked so the fins push the air to # 1, 2 , & 3 cyl. Hope that helps you out. Attached image(s) |

I had all this apart to get my altenater rebuilt before fitting my motor to the car, make sure you clean or replace the earth strap and fit nylock nuts and washers to the air diverter to prevent damage to this rather fragile fiberglass piece.
Also make sure you torque the fan housing outer strap to factory spec,if too tight you risk the blades hitting the housing or worse cracking it,another rather fragile and expensive part. Make sure your drive pulley is shimmed properly or the belt will wear quickly and flog out the pulley outer...ask me how I know (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) . Good luck and be careful with that fan. |

That's good ,not a fan of internal regulators in the 914 situation ,not such a big deal with a 911 but a real bitch with our cars if it fails.
Go well. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) that's the way it is on my fan.

This is why I did the big access hole on my firewall and I've already used it once to R&R the fan. Now I have the sneaking suspicion that my alternator bearings are going. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Yes tell me about it,I have gremlins in mine after rebuild done by the best guy I have known for years, full rebuilt but it has a mind of its own and clearly won't play well with my AGM battery, makes 13.2 to 13.80 when it feels like it and a charge light that switches off when the engine is going or stays on till I rev it to over idle (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) . Can't wait to remove it and get it sorted like needing a dose of the sh#ts TBO. , |

Y'all are making it harder than it has to be.
Just follow the directions in this article: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=10187 That lets you pull the alternator without removing the carbs and fan shroud. Clay |

Clay No way that would work for me with my big honking twin plug dizzy. My oversize access panel I can have the whole fan out and on the bench in under an hour. Back in takes about the same time. |
