I know the rennshifter is the only way to go, but I cant spend 400+ on a shifter. I dont hate 901 shifting, but a shorter throw would be nice. Does the quick shift from performance products do that effectively? Or am I just asking for trouble?

"Installed with normal hand tools (no machining or welding) in less than one hour"
from performance product's website

And it only works for 70-72, so i'd have to pick up a tail shift

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

has anyone used it?

I'd say that's a step backwards.

Not the whole trans, just the shifter itself...

First thing you should do is verify *all* the bushings are in good shape and actually on the car.

Once this is sorted you may find that the shifting feel is acceptable to you.
If you want more later, you'll already be one step ahead in the game as bad or missing bushings will need to be replaced before any of the aftermarket goodies will work anyway.

I want a Rennshifter, too.

Oh yeah, i have brand new bushings. Its going in a brand new car (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

My only comparison for 901 shifting is my 912, which is MISSING the firewall bushing, and I still like the shifting. Ive driven a few well adjusted 914s with side shift and they felt great, but a shorter throw would be cool. If it made the car MUCH more difficult to select gears or anything, i'd pass, but I was just trying to see if anyone on the board got one and tossed it because it was crap or got one and loves it.

Call me weird. I like the stock shifter and throw on this car. I havent heard of stock shifters breaking like some aftermarket products. Shifter change will probably be the last thing I do to my car.

Have to agree. Rebuilt my sideshifter, changed all bushings e.t.c and installed a rennshift junior. Found with the reduced throw I was always fighting gear shifts and struggling to find certain gears - just never felt right. I borrowed an original 901 shifter which I have just fitted and the difference is amazing - my car now shifts great. A slightly shorter throw would be good but I am really happy with the way it shifts now.

i put one in my /6 and liked it. (this was back when it's all there was. actually, it wasn't the WeltMeister unit, but a much older version from TARGET Motorsports. same thing...

/4 and /6 linkages are different, but i liked it. for one thing, it was a LOT easier to reach 4th when snugly belted. in traffic the 1-2-3 shift was easier.

it will do nothing to improve accuracy and you might want to make sure your reverse lockout springs and guide are up to snuff.

the RennShifter is worth it, but if you like a close pattern, the Welt part is a decent value. note - unlike the RennShift, the Welt unit just changes the pivot - so while the fore/aft distance is reduced, which is good, but it also makes the distance between planes (back and forth) smaller, which means you must be more accurate in your shifting.

i believe the one howard has pictured is for a tailshifter. note the ball on the bottom that goes into the ballcup bushing on the front shift rod. for a sideshift trans, the front rod connector found on the stock shifter is used. i noted the effort to shift increased when i went to the wietmiester, which fyi, requires no cut-epoxy-etc. as stated, if the bushings are bad, a shortshift conversion is no cure. check the springs on the R/1 indent plate (you have to remove the shifter), usually they are loaded with grease, dust/dirt, and gunk. spray them down with carb cleaner or berryman's to clean them.
