I have had to replace 2 bosch starters in just a little over a year. Is it common for 914's to go threw starters often? I have ran redundent grounds and power to see if it was an issue with that and i still have the same problems. Would a heat shield help at all?

No, starters don't fail that often, and a heat shield isn't necessary. Something else is wrong. How did you diagnose the starter failure? I'd be curious to check out one of the old dead ones and see what went wrong with it.

on the 2 fail starters, it has been the solenoids that have gone bad. Turn the key and and the starter just clicks. If I use a starter switch the gear will spin but will not come out of the starter to engage the flywheel. Wacking the starter while the crank position is engaged will get it work, But I do not enjoy doing that. It is kinda embarasing.

Have you tried using a jumper directly from the battery to the trigger on the solenoid? Could be a few things in there that could contribute to this like seat interlock relay/ign switch or you could do as I did put on a gear reduction starter and no problems since (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) AL

Yes i have tried using a jumper, and I get the same results. I already replaced the ignition switch, thinking that was the cuase. Seat interlock I have no idea about. where is it and what does it do? And what starter did you install?

My car is a 75 2.0L

You definitely have the relay! I have a 74 and I just removed the relay and made a nifty little jumper that replaces the relay. The reduction starter is gonna be a little spendy but look at it from a reliability standpoint! AL
