Thoughts on how I should deal with this area - just on a long-term basis - given that you can't take that apart, treat and then put it back together?

You know...THAT is a good question now that you say it.
It's one of those things that - and I know I'm a broken record here - I'm away from the 914 for extended periods and only get a quick burst of opportunity to work on and play with it so I load up on questions and unload them in the meantime.

I'll give it a good look next time - it could just be dirt/algae in need of a scrub.
