The mounting legs of my mirrors are getting pretty pitted.

They look like chrome plated steel so I am afraid to abuse them too much for fear of blowing through the chrome into the steel.

Is it safe to polish them a lot or do they need to be re-chromed?

How about after market mirrors, like these:

Anyone know if they are all stainless?

The ad pretty much says nothing about it.

Working on the second restore of my blue 914...

The arm and base are chromed. The housing for the mirror is stainless.

OK thanks!

The housings look new not surprisingly.

Looks like rust developing under the chrome on the base.

Not sure how to refurb short of sending them to a chrome shop.

Maybe some shiny zinc plating? I have the caswell set up.

Chrome spray paint?

Maybe cheapest to just buy a new one...

Bought one from SM for the passenger side a couple of years ago. Good quality, no problems.
