OK,

I am a bit envious. Seems that many of you have figured out how to purchase springs and shocks for the rear of the 914.

I have found myself going to different web sites being completely confused and as a result looking at all of you with envy.

The 914 rubber guys have 150lb springs, no shocks. Various sites have Bilstein's and then a few have an 'adjustable' gas shock called KYB. I found some 'racing' sites with 500lbs springs and then many options - mostly indecipherable.

I need some couch time, here is what I am looking for.

I have a mostly original '74 2.0 with a blown rear shock - that blown shock is original, which I am sure comes as no shock. The car seems to be a couple of inches lower than stock, I would like to have it ride a bit higher

Other than that, original safe performance is all that I am seeking -

What would you recommend?

Spring LBS capability?
Vendor?
Approximate costs for estimates?

I don't know the stock spring rates but the PO told me my Bilsteins have 100 pound springs and IMO they work with the extra weight of the "6".
Bruce Stone has some good used ones in the FS/WTB section ,he only sells good stuff so would pay to contact him ASAP as they will sell fast @ his pricing.

140.....Spring Rate Bilstein Sports with adjustable perches.

Rebel Racing.

$800....rear auspension only.

Rim width and tires will also dictate the handling of the car. They figure into the equation.

Plenty of threads here.....search is your best friend for the couch.

Stock springs are 55lb. 100 lb to replace them is a good start. I have a bunch of good used shocks that were tested by Eibach when I was working with 914 Rubber to developed the springs they have. The stock shocks can not change the rear ride height. If you want to change that you need a Koni or Bilstein with an adjustable perch. If it is low in the back the springs are probably saging.

I went with the setup from Ground Control.

Was looking for a good street ride, Not too stiff. So I ordered the 125# springs. Previously was running 914/6 rear springs with KYB shocks. I think they were 100# springs. (Two yellow dots)

This setup handles great using the stock front torsion bars. and Bilstein front shocks. But I have not had it on the track.

Eventually I may get Konis for the front also, but for now it works just fine.

The first time I did it, I bought 140lbs springs and kept my KYBs. That was the cool AX setup at the time, or so my noob resarch showed. My ride height was off - raked higher in the rear. I was never happy with that - and waited about 10 years for my suspension to settle. Yeah, right.

When I recently redid my suspension, I called Eric Shea and bought what I needed from him. Way, WAY better.

I have this set that have been in the garage, need cleaned. Have 3 green paint marks
the shocks were good, I'm not sure what they are, Mexican monroes? - bolt on.
150 + shipping? LA

We are in the process of doing shocks and struts with Eibach, but the Covid thing has shut them down for now.

We will be doing a Group buy on a complete system, but it's a ways off.

If you need something not the Bilstiens as the best bang for the buck right now.

We have the 100# and a 140/160 progressive spring.

if you purchase the original duplicate factory springs you cannot go wrong.

there is a set for the 914-6 because of the heavier engine weight
there is a set for the 914-4

do not guess on spring rates, do it the way the engineers did it. (unless you are racing your car!!!!)

Bought a pair rear shocks last February and it was ship last Feb. 18 in Pompano Beach, FL and it was in LA facility by Feb. 23 and should be delivered on my door Feb. 25. Well after several follow-up from me and the seller, USPS said it is at the Bell Garden facility.
Well never got them and no more update what happen to my shocks. Until now still show on the tracking status the same info that the item is still within the Nerwork faciltiy.

Shipping cost $65 for it and it just went MIA (missing in action)!

FWIW, I'm going through a spring selection process right now. I spent quite a bit of time last night researching 2.25 id springs for the adjustable perches we got from a member here. He included the helper springs and spacer, with 8" 200 and 225 lb springs which are too much for this project.

I wanted to use the last set of 160 progressives I got from ^Dave Shepard^ RIP, but they are (of course) too large diameter and don't have flat ends, and really require stock upper and lower spring perches.

I found a place in the UK that has a big selection of 2.25 springs in different lengths. I'm thinking that a longer (than 8") spring with the same load rating will give more suspension travel and provide more adjustability. Burton Power UK They have a 14" 120 lb spring that I think would be worth a try

I'm also looking at a 9" Hypercoil in 130 lb These are also a consideration Twisted springs

I got a tip years ago about using a spare wheel/tire to push on to compress the springs if you don't have a spring compressor, and it works pretty good with two people
