Are the front shift rods the same diameter for side and tail shift transmissions?

My car is a '71 that was converted to a side shift transmission. I bought the Rix conversion shift bushing from 914 rubber but I can not get it to stay on place when I push the front shift rod through the firewall. It pushes the bushing out. The shift rod diameter where it passes through the firewall is .92 inches, 23.39 mm.

What bushing do I need for that size front shift rod?

That's probably not an early tunnel shift rod.
It appears that they sleeved the late rod to fit the original bushing.
Get the sleeve off and you might be able to use my bearing.

I wondered about the possibility that the PO sleeved it because it just didn't look right. I'm going to try the bushings Mike is sending me on this car. I think the early should work.

I swear the PO of this car must always lean to the side sitting on the toilet. Everything that has been done to this car is half-assed.

Chris, I'll keep your bearing for the project car I have sitting beside the house. I will get to it after I finish this car and finish the engine rebuild on my 944 Cab.
