In my 914 ownership history, I have had 4cylinders with D-Jet, L-Jet, Dual Webers, Dual Dellorttos, and sixes with Dual Webers, MFI, and Motronic. The only thing I have not personally owned is a six with CIS, but I have worked on them.
For the 4 cylinder cars, L-Jet wins. Better drive-ability, smoother, and no sync issues. For the 6 cylinder cars, Motronic is the best system. Just turn the key and it idles, cold or hot. But for pure engine love.. MFI. Nothing sounds like 6 velocity stacks when the engine comes on to the cams. And the throttle response is phenomenal. But to get that, you sacrifice cold starting, cold running, a very steep learning curve, and fuel mileage. The invention of the computer chip made for a quantum change in the internal combustion engine. Even the most basic EFI system is far better in performance, fuel mileage and emissions than the absolute best carburetors. My 4.0L six with Motronic gets better fuel mileage than the 2.0L factory six with Webers. And the Motronic doesn't leave me with a gas smell in the garage after driving it. The only reason I don't switch the factory six to Microsquirt is it is a factory six. Remember, this is YOUR car. Use what makes you happy. If you love carbs, go for it. If you can get a Mr.Fusion and a flux capacitor in your 914....well... I want to see it. Clay |
