Did I read somewhere that there is a battery tray, plastic you can set on the metal to help protect it in the long run?

You can get a battery mat that has acid neutralizing chemical in it but would be better to get a proper sealed battery but some brands still leak.

Go to your local marine store, they have plastic battery boxes, or look up on Amazon.
