I know it's not a 914 but does
The oil drain plug on an 87 VW
van need a washer?

Always need a softer sealing washer between the drain plug and the engine block....no matter what the vehicle make.
A drain plug on it's own is not enough.
Basic auto 101.

Yes copper crush washer or alloy type are fine.
