While taking photos I came across this mid-1971 914-4 with basket weave seat inserts. Are there other cars out there with basketweave door panels like this? Or should this car have smooth grained vinyl and has been restored incorrectly? It had been repainted but was mostly original. Owner does not know history.

Every '71 I own has smooth vinyl. What's on your seats?

The yellow 1971 in the first photo had basketweave insert, but the 1971 smooth-grained vinyl elsewhere. Based on the chassis number, I suspect it was built around March 1971. It has the 1971 vinyl below the arm rest, as well.

I had a late 71, and it had the smooth vinyl. I suspect the door panel was replaced/updated on the car in question.

According to your VIN, though built in late 1971, your 914 is a 1972 model year.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Every original '70 and '71 that I have inspected had smooth vinyl door panels.

I'm going with incorrectly restored unless I hear differently. Thanks for your input!

Hello,
my "late" 71 (built in July 71) has the smooth vinyl on the door panels.
