@Beakster

Ultimately it doesn't matter what you or I think.

Free market price is set by the price a voluntary buyer is willing to pay to a voluntary seller.

Well at least your were able to finally see that the 914 is by far the superior platform. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) and came over from the dark side. Nothing wrong with a Chalon in my book, I used to desperatly want one in the late 80's early 90's. My tastes just changed with time and now I prefer the GT look but hold nothing against Chalons. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Superhawk ...

I see the Chalon kit on a 914 is like the Slantnose on a 911 or (930)
or Widebody Slantnose 914 .. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

Not just 914's, many a Porsche has gone from great car to thrown out with the trash. Take my 911 for example, special ordered by a King, King Hussein of Jordan, only to be left decades later rotting in a field.

Paid $30k-ish for my converted 914-6 and it still needs about $15k worth of work. Dunno if there is such a thing as a cheap six anymore unless you get lucky.

And there you have it. Free Market Value of a 914/6 VIN.

Next step, rebuild the rest of the car around the VIN.

That is an incorrect statement!
That car only needs quarter panels and fenders, not even close to building a car around a VIN.

You hit the nail on the head Glenn. I saw the car in person and it doesn’t appear to need structural repair or accident damage repair. It needs a Chalon delete repair. It is a good starting point.

To all those haters out there a real 6 chassis is still a rare bird
A matching numbers 6 is beyond most pocketbooks putting a real 6 motor even non matching is a viable option since there where only as many motors made as cars I would think. Most of you can be in your 4s or tribute conversions ,only hating those who have one. I'll stick to my nom matching number 6 All of us have our likes and dislike just let it be.

the problem is finding new quarters and fenders. Just not available. THEN if one finds a donor car with four good ones, usually the car is worth saving and not cutting up for parts

I also would like to say even if you find a motor you have a difficult time knowing if it's correct. Porsche has made it difficulty to identify chassis/motor combos due to those unscrupulous people who swap bins plates and stamp cases just to cheat someone out of cash. You know what happened to Seinfeld .Everyone would like to make there cars correct but finances don't allow I think this one can be saved with deep pockets.

Seems like a smart buy for someone who isn't wrapped up in a 914-6 concours car and just wants a great 914-6 to drive and enjoy.

If it doesn't need structural repairs, it's already miles and miles ahead of a lot of 914s that do, and this one is an idea candidate for a 914-6 GT build if you've got to put four fenders on it anyway. Color change, at this point? Who cares, but Signal Orange is cool. And I'd way rather work with a good rub that needs four fenders than anything that needs "inner fenders" (and more…). While the Chalon kit is creaking in a dumpster, it's perfect time to address chassis stiffening, too.

A dead and/or rusty but straight and complete early 914-4 would make a great donor for parts, and those cars are out there.

I'm a 914/6 lover and previously posted that I wish I could be the one to save it.

However, It needs far more than quarter panels before it will be in the hunt for that $100k 914/6 pricetag. Even with all the work, the final value will be highly dependent on the quality of the restoration and underlying workmanship.

As the Doc stated, it's not quite as simple as lifting some panels off a ratted out /4 and returning it to stock.

I do agree it's not as bad as the other flamed out wreck that has been offered in the past and is a good value to someone, especially if they can do the metalwork, paint, engine, trans, and electrical all in their own shop. Someday I'll wish it had been the right time for me to step up. Unfortunately my hands and garage are already busy with trying to save a /4 that should have been scrapped.
