One was driven by Piech, the other a gift to Ferry.

In '97 I exchanged about three emails with the Porsche museum trying to check out either one, no dice.

My reading suggests the good doctor wasn't that impressed with his car,I'am thinking a GP based motor wasn't a great street drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) .

Been interested in these cars for a long time, and finally met the man who built both. Was fortunate to spend an afternoon with him as part of a research project for "Issue 0" of 000, which was the first time he had seen the cars in 50~ years. Pretty neat.

The link you provided was quite interesting, the point was to find out more about them. You helped a lot with that

The engine for the Dr's car was de-tuned, and I want to say that he put quite a few KM's on it

There's always been just enough lore around 914s that despite Porsche giving up on them, they really were great cars.

I mean, c'mon, did they stuff a 917 motor in a 924 and give one to their cousin Dieter for his 9th birthday? Maybe, but you get the point...

The silver 914-8 is the ultimate 914.
End of story.

It was, and he did.

The orange 914S didn't get a lot of use. Apparently more powerful but not so tractable or nice to drive on the street. The silver 914S with Weber carbs instead of race MFI ended up with a lot more km on it, though it's hard to know what the split looked like between Ferry driving and Ferry riding in the passenger seat. I get the sense he did a fair bit of that. It's also said he was a really smooth driver and nice to be with as a passenger, where one family member said riding with Ferry's sister (who had a reputation for driving through the alps very quickly) was, ahem, "inconvenient."

I too think this pair of 914Ss are among the ultimate 914s, alongside the Le Mans winner, the Daytona winner, the IMSA winner(s), the Marathon cars, and maybe a handful of interesting privateer 914 race cars.

^ To my surprise, I am actually in that last pic. That was when we shot the Piëch car for Panorama. Michael Alan Ross with the camera.

I have no doubt Ferry's was the better car, but I still love the orange one.
