They fit over the J tube that comes up through the engine tin from the heat ex changers. If you don't have a auxiliary electric fan, you use these to cap off the J tubes. So whatever size that J tube is, the inside diameter of the cap needs to fit over, and not necessarily snugly. They are typically fitted with a hose clamp, which is why they have two slots. Getting an accurate inner and outer dimension on a 50 year old plastic cap is a bit of a crap shoot, but...
