Why is the thermostat expanded in the second picture? Was the pavement that hot?

Bruce, I heated it up to show that it expands about a inch 1/2 inch . I guess I could have done a video instead to show it in working condition.

I may be wrong but the bellow in the 1st pic looks also to be expanded slightly. Was it hot day?

It was not, about 75 ambient. If anyone has one on their car they can measure i will measure this one.
