Dont have one, but heard a lot of them. Bring $$$. NOS Tubes can be crazy expensive, but they are generally better than the Russian and Chinese tubes made today

hehe ...did you knwo that russia made those tubes so they could be protected from EMP's .....cool stufff. I have a tube clock....a clock with tube digits....its so cool.

And oh, by the way. I have a tube preamp. At work I have a rebuilt dynaco ST70, vintage early 1960's. My boy and I are working on a tube-based bass amp. It's a disease really. Playing with some pretty good voltages: 450-1000V.

My next amp will be based on an old Eimac radio transmitter tube, the 304TL. Will be good for 100 watts per channel, single ended.

I have a ST70 also. I had it hotrodded about two years ago. It sounds sweet. You can listen to it all night.

Even makes CDs sound good. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I've got a Bottlehead Foreplay kit that "someday" I'd like to try and assemble.

I had a tube Pre-Amp for a while. I always like tubes in my system somewhere, but I feel you are better off having the'hiss' at the amp level, rather than amplifying the hiss from the pre-amp.

I've got a ST70 somewhere...I think for an Audiophile, it's a right of passage.

I'm on AudioGon every morning. I buy lots of stuff on there...mostly 'tweak' stuff lately though...

I saw a Dynaco ST70 that some guy re-did and modded out. It sold for $$ that was out of my league. I want one that I could play CDs on....and records.

I can almost hear the audio just oozing out of the spreakers......

I have never heard a tube amp system, but I can imagine what it would sound like.

Playing some Zoot Suit Riot with it turned up........

tube sounds are great... I have my '64 Fender tremolux and love the sounds...


I can't afford the NOS tubes though... but I've found a combo that works for me...
the 4 12AX7s are Electro Harmonix the 6l6s are Svetlana and the 5AR4 is a Sovtek
great sound, a little hotter than vintage...

Nice systems.

As far as tubes in preamp vs. amps, If I had to choose, I think I'd put the tubes as early in the system as possible. My preamp is actually a hybrid, a PAS3 with SS buffered outputs by Joe Curcio. Very nice and low output impedance. Even drives my tube amp, hehe.

Tubes are great! It's a matter of system matching though. Im using a Manley stingray 50 watt amp to drive my 89 db sonus faber cremona auditors. About 1/2 on volume is all you can do before you start to get compression. Wonderfull system match for a smaller size room.
I really liked the VTL 185 mono blocks when I was auditioning amps years ago. Their stereo 150 amp is also a nice unit. The audiogon is a great site, picked up my stingray there.

Yeah, I've still got all the tubes from that shoot. Some REAL rare Amperex Bugle Boys, Mullards, KT88s...killer stuff. The photos are amazing in their 20"X30" glory...

I'm running a Wadia 850 that was modded by Steve Huntly at GNSC int a Pass Labs X1 Preamp, then into the VS55. Like I said earlier, I don't like amplifying hiss. My pre is about as transparent as possible, so the VS55 can take a REAL clean signal and do it's magic. My ProAc Response 2S' do the trick from there...

Yup...we have one series in print now, and the second series coming out this winter. We've sold quite a bit of them, and almost sold out of a few. Limited runs...big photos...but they aint cheap.
