I learned a lot, having not been around then. I watched the second video. They did use a small mig wire at the factory. I have seen it after soda blasting.( I was not sure if they were pecker tracks?)
I saw a transmission with the same cut out recommended here for correct adjustment. Everybody dressed weird. Everybody was focused on life and simplicity. Not one smart phone in a single hand. Thank you for sharing. Matt |

In the 1973 Factory tour video there are scenes featuring cars with New Jersey
tags. Porsche North America was in Englewood Cliffs NJ at the time. I recognise the Palisades Interstate Parkway above the Hudson and the lower winding road along the rivers edge. Later near the end the skyline of New York City is seen in the background viewed from Kennedy Boulivard in West New York. Joseph Hoppen from that headquarters. We once saw all the Race of Champions 911s lined up on that property. Virtually no security at that time. Just wandered in and snooped around. The good old days. Saw the first Turbos too. |

There is something about these period advertising pieces that evoke the spirit of the sort of loosey goosey feel good 70’s, or maybe it is just a reminder of that devil may care feeling that I had then as a young guy. Don’t know but always fun to watch.
And then there is always the obligatory T&A shots that are just so unacceptable now. O well, I suppose we are somehow better off for there absence now. Lots of hand work quality control in those cars. I know some of the high end brands still get a lot of that. Serious craftsmanship. |

Back in July 1984, while well-dressed with a camera dangling around my neck, I walked unescorted inside a few Porsche buildings in Zuffenhausen. Got to see the 911 assembly line and a few 928s getting sprayed by hand... tons of empty beer bottles inside the spray facility ledge. There were about 50 recently sprayed 911 bodies on dollies... all pushed by hand. No one said a word to me the entire time.

thanks for link.
liked the bit in 70s film where said being a test driver was the most highly coveted job. (the story about beer bottles in the spray booth by roblav1 is interesting, bet that was to wash the taste of paint out of their mouths, the guys who used to do clear coat floor finishes in construction here were the same, wouldn't matter if its 8.00am in the morning - out came the beer). my business partner's father was a test driver for mercedes in germany in the late 60s/early70s. he has good tales from that time. out on the banked loop circuit with C-111s. he was only in the saloons. said you were expected to hold a strict steady speed for hours on end in the saloons around the loop and if you deviated you would get a stern talking to, or worse relieved of duties. whenever he comes into the office and sees the 914 parked he smiles, saying he remembered them on the autobahns. "we used to pass those cars all the time in the mercedes". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) i noticed this in the side bar of that hemmings page. never knew about it. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2020/07/08...ooked-like-this |

Thanks for providing the videos! I have a DVD copy of the 356 one and loved the 1973 factory tour video which I had never seen before. We are fortunate to have these early videos, wouldn't it be great if they could be restored to even higher quality?
