new to the 914 world and try hard to get this one road worthy.
recently purchased 1971 1.7L. got running after 5 years sitting. was having rough idle and oil leaks so I pulled engine to overall tasks (easier when out of car) and clean up When I got to replacing the pushrod tube, I looked at the rods and was getting this wear on 3 of 4 rods. see arrows Happening on both sides. valves are okay, checked compression, all good but tops of pistons were very sooty and also were all plugs what would cause the wear? do they need replaced or can i flip them upside down additionally can this be part of the rough idle and sooty build-up? |

Ive seen this when the tube retention wire isnt correctly seated & can wear into the soft alum PR's
As long as the groove/cut isnt significant Id give um a quick sand & reuse. They are fairly thick wall tube so should be no problem BTW @sirandy this probably need moving to the garage |
