Seems like “what’s the best battery for our teeners” always comes up. Here’s Road n Tracks current opinion...

May just be me growing into a grumpy old man. That R&T site completely summarizes why I no longer pay attention to Road and Track and many othef buff magazines.

You may be a grumpy old man...but as a likely much younger guy I whole heartedly agree. Junk. It's sad-I used to really look forward to reading those magazines just a bit over a decade ago. |

I'm looking for a new battery for the new to me BB. I put gel batteries in a boat several years ago because they were in a location that would go under water occasionally. Seemed fine but sold the boat after three years. No idea how long they lasted.
I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive Hearst for taking Autoweek away. Road and Track is a very poor substitute. Now I'm sad to see that Hearst bought BaT? |

The Die Hard battery is only $22.00.
Hard to beat that price. |

I’ve had great luck with the Odessey PC680 in my -4 previously and in my -6 now.

I scrolled down far enough to see "Optima RedTop" as the first thing listed, then I closed my browser.
garbage.. last 2 didn't even make it to the 3 year mark. Since then the Odysseys have been for good me. PC925 or PC680 though. Just replaced my first PC925 after ~10 or so years of pretty hard abuse. |

I've got the XS Power battery and it's an AGM and it's great.
Fits perfectly into our battery tray using the stock hold down bracket. R&T shows the wrong one though. You want the D4700. Here's mine: starting on post #782 http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...9327&st=760 |

R&T, C/D, Autoweek…these were the absolute standard-bearers as I grew up, giving me hours and hours of reading pleasure and no small amount of information I found fascinating. |

That’s what I hear, the new red tops ain’t what they used to be. My 10y/o 6v red top is still good (just jinxed myself) in the old car. Good to know about the Odyssey, I’ll need a new one when I hook up the power train. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Can't even count how many hours I spent in the library reading those publications in my teens. |

Another vote for Odyssey batteries. I wouldn't take any advice from Road and Track these days.

I'm very confused by their quote from Consumer Reports (and why we should listen to CR about car technology is beyond me). They claim AGM batteries tolerate discharge better and are best for cars that sit a long time. That is the opposite of what I have read and experienced. If you leave a car sit with an AGM battery, it is best to have a battery tender on it. I ruined a lightly used Optima (and one of the old good ones) by letting it go completely flat. That was an expensive lesson. Don't get me wrong, I love AGM, but will never let one sit like that again.
BTW, Optima claims they fixed the quality issues. I have a new one so will see how long it lasts. |
