So while I wait on some sheet metal to come in I've been working on some interior stuff.
I'm going to run a RennShifter with a center console. I do not like the shifter boot supplied. It looks like a cv joint boot to me. I'm thinking of a leather boot for it. Anyone running the above setup that can post a few pics and where you may have gotten the boot from?

TIA,

Just take an old leather boot and the rennshifter to an upholstery shop, tell them to make you something as close as possible.
You want leather, I think the AP shift boot is the only interior 914 item that's real leather.

I was thinking if there was one from another vehicle that someone retro fitted.
I could always take it to an upholstery shop but wanted to see what else was available first.

That's quite the dogleg, if it sewn it will likely need something custom for that bend.
I have a Rennshifter as well, so please post your solution when you find it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'll have to wait for my custom console gauge and shifter plates to come in. Once I have those in hand I can start messing with the boot. Right now I have the cardboard templates the I can mess with to get some measurements. I'll keep you posted if I come up with something. Meantime anyone else... I would make one out of vinyl from the back of an old 914 seat and then have an upholstery shop or fabric shop reproduce it in leather.

You have no pedals, no steering gear, and no wiring. You have WAY more things to worry about than a shifter boot. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif)

Use on for a 986 Boxster. Plenty on eBay. You can even chose your color.

i also have a center console with a Rennshift, and although it was fairly tricky, i was able to solve this problem last fall. you will have to build a customized bottom panel. here's how i did it.

first, i used a 911 SC-style boot — much better appearance, and they can be affixed to the underside of the panel as a final step, similar to how the factory 914 center console shift boot is attached.

to build the panel, i made several iterations using foam core panels at first. then i used the most accurate of these templates to trace and cut a version out of 1/4" plywood, and iterated a couple times on that. if you intend to cover it with thin foam + vinyl as i did, remember to account for the extra thickness. i found the install to be pretty tricky due to how close the larger diameter shifter body is to the inside of the left console panel. it's TIGHT in there. i will get some pictures for you.

I don't see the shift adjuster window on the back of that Rennshift. How do you adjust it?

Thanks for noticing that Clay... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

My metal work is on hold while I wait on some sheet metal to get here from out West.
Engine is on hold waiting for parts but the trans is done.
So I went and messed around with the interior stuff.
Figured chip away at the list even if it's not on the chassis.
Do it now or later, either way it needs to get done. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

I had the same issue with fit too. It's diffidently tight on the left side. I have a cardboard template made up and seams like things will fit ok. When you get a chance post your pics. Thanks.

I made the boot for my shifter with about $5 worth of vinyl from JoAnne's and maybe 10 minutes of sewing time.

Just make a paper pattern first and its no problem. Super super easy.

sorry for the delay. here's a shot of the template, and the finished installed panel. it was extremely tricky to get right, and i'm about 95% happy with it. getting the panel in and out requires some careful prying of the console left panel, plus plenty of cajoling and the use of not a few colorful metaphors.

I ran into the same issue getting the template on/off.
I'm gonna go with a leather shift boot now that I see yours installed with the center console. Thanks for adding the pics.
