Back when I first got my 914 (during the 80s), I wanted to do this to it:
This is the "Diablo 914". There was a big write up on it in VW/Porsche magazine, and I loved it. I still have the magazine from then. Luckily for me, I didn't have the available finances to do it. Now that I am older, I know I would have regretted it. I can appreciate the 914 body for what it is now. Clay |

Was a bit young in 1980, but my first dream for my tired red 914 was a full 916 kit with AZEV five-spoke wheels in silver. But it was just a VW&Porsche-fueled dream that I had no way of affording while working nights at Toys R Us.
And then the idea of a very simple 914 that sits nicely on good wheels/tires started to come into view… |

Gotta admit, I wanted several of those listed. Now I am like Less is More.

Cant believe this has not been mentioned yet. HOOD BADGE, to make it a real porsh. A 914 should have had a hood badge from the factory. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) To each their own, but the 914's nose just looks incomplete to me without something there. I understand why the 914 didn't get a hood crest, and why originalists don't like to see them (I wouldn't drill a hood to add one, or mount one to a highly original 914). But the fact that so many 914s had Porsche badging on their steering wheel and engine lid—not to mention the fact that all were designed, engineered, developed, and supported by Porsche—justifies its place on the car IMO. Frankly, the P-O-R-S-C-H-E letters on my engine lid always seemed disingenuous to me when I had a Type IV. Love the style of those grille letters, but decided to mount a 914-VW-Porsche badge out back instead. And yet they put one on a 924... a car originally designed to be an Audi sports car and built with VW and Audi parts. At least the 914 had a bunch of 911 parts in it. And far more than quite a bit of 911 parts sharing: The 914 was designed under Butzi, engineered under Piëch, developed under Piëch, and supported by Porsche. Raced and rallied by the Porsche factory team, as well. The 914 also started out with a Porsche typ number, unlike the 924—which to my knowledge may be the only Porsche to start out with a VW typ number (EA425, iirc) and be retroactively assigned a Porsche typ number. |

Riviera 5-spoke wheels on a standard 914 4x130 bolt pattern.
I actually still like the look, but will put the proper Fuchs 2L Alloys on mine for the resto. . And also changing paint colors like daily outfits! Mine was L80E Light Ivory from the factory, then was repainted by the P+A dealer in Sahara Beige & then Gold before the OO/PO bought it new i11/9/72, then I bought it Dec. `75 & then did Copper metallic in 1976 with some rust spot repairs, & Anthracite Grey metallic myself in my 1983 rolling resto. . I can appreciate the 914 body for what it is now. Clay Thanks for this @ClayPerrine ! . . .while this may be familiar to the veteran 'Teeners, it is new to me, and from these 2 pics, at least, I 'd call this the best proportioned kit I've ever seen (in 2d pictures). I mean no disrespect to the classic Ferrari freaks (which, often, but not always, includes me), but as a classic car nut and (even worse) an automotive design sculptor, I think the modeling, proportion and design of that front (and perhaps the car as a whole) would stand up against the Maserati 300S, Ferrari 250 GTO and 250LM. The bodyside and rear quarter have a bit of 245 Dino too . . . Methinks the Diablo looks better than the GTO kit on a 240Z, at least in the door to rear-quarter transition (though the GTO's is perhaps a bit abrupt as well . . .I know - blaspheme! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) ). Depending on the rear treatment, I'd love to drive one (based on a rusted hulk) if the header/windshield were cut down 35mm or so. . . Would I rather have a 904 kit - absolutely . . .still . . . I would also love to see pics of the rear and read that VW/Porsche magazine article. I'm expecting a debacle, as no kit car I've ever seen was very well done from all angles - would love to be surprised though . . .proper tailights (form, proportion and placement) would be critical here. I have resisted the hood badge for years, I have them in decal and crest form even with out the pins for no drilling installation. I think not having one makes it a bit more unique being the only Porsche never to get one. Funny how the owners manual shows the car with the badge making me think it was going to have one then at the last minute marketing big wigs said no !

Tinted windows look really '80s on 914s.
Non stock quasi-Italian side mirrors? Yuck. |
