Early switches are tricky. You have to take out steering column to do it right. Wires have to be pulled through column and soldered into plug harness. 1970-71 VW bug turn signal switch is what you need to use. If it was me, I would look for a NOS steering column. Chances are you old one is worn out anyway. Look over on theSamba.com, Ebay or put a WTB here and see what comes up. Make SURE you find the column number you have in the car. Seems like there is a 12 pin or 14 pin version.

Anyone have a source for 70-71 turn signal switch. Reproduction, used, new ? It’s the same turn signal switch as a 1970 VW Bug. However, the colors of the wiring harness are different from the colors used by Porsche on its switches, so you have to trace and label the wires for the plug. |

There is always the option of replacing the steering column with a 72 and later one.
But that has it's own wiring mods you would have to be able to do. Clay |

I have a 71 914-4 and am in the process of replacing. It isn't that bad and I had to find an aftermarket. AutohauzAZ has them.
JP Group Dansk Turn Signal Switch P/N: 311953513B 1 x $23.19 Remove the steering wheel, and disconnect the 12 pin connector at the base of the steering column. There are 4 Allen bolts that need to be removed under the steering column, and you need to loosen the Allen bolt that connects to the steering linkage. The steering column will come straight out if you do that. Then you have to remove the solder on the pins, and remove the lever wires - there are 8 I believe. Wiring colors are a bit different so you will need to map the new colors to the old locations. Take pics before you remove the pins. You will have to resolver the pins on the new wires - and do that after you put the lever wires through the column. Make sure you don't cut the new wires too short, there is room for extra in the lever housing area. The connector housing is fragile (I broke mine), but I am able to get a new one through Porsche directly. Not cheap but available. |
