I have a 71 914-4 and am in the process of replacing. It isn't that bad and I had to find an aftermarket. AutohauzAZ has them.

JP Group Dansk Turn Signal Switch
P/N: 311953513B
1 x $23.19

Remove the steering wheel, and disconnect the 12 pin connector at the base of the steering column. There are 4 Allen bolts that need to be removed under the steering column, and you need to loosen the Allen bolt that connects to the steering linkage. The steering column will come straight out if you do that.

Then you have to remove the solder on the pins, and remove the lever wires - there are 8 I believe. Wiring colors are a bit different so you will need to map the new colors to the old locations. Take pics before you remove the pins. You will have to resolver the pins on the new wires - and do that after you put the lever wires through the column. Make sure you don't cut the new wires too short, there is room for extra in the lever housing area.

The connector housing is fragile (I broke mine), but I am able to get a new one through Porsche directly. Not cheap but available.
