Hi everyone Ian new to the forum. I have a 914 race car which is using a 3L sc motor turned around fan up against the rear bulk head, currently using a 914 transmission which has failed. Ian looking at swooping it for a 915 transmission, has anyone got any advice?

I haven't done it.
but many on here have.

its a pretty involved process
the 914 trans was built to rotate the other way
so you have to open the transmission and flip the ring and pinion gear direction
I believe there is some machining also to make it fit.

plus you have to buy a 916 kit to change the tail cone/adapt the shifter
those kits are expensive.

I believe some have designed a cable shifter replacement also

a lot of fabrication and expense

I know there are multiple threads on here about it.
and others with more knowledge will chime in.

This one came out of a 914-6 race car with a 3.6. It’s plug and play. Not cheap but way cheaper than building it yourself. I will open the case and check the gears and diff prior to ship to make sure it’s all good but it was pulled from a running driving car without any issues a couple months ago.

There aren't any cheap options to upgrade from a 901/914 trans unfortunately. In line with what mepstein said, 915s have gotten expensive and then you have to do a bunch of work to put one in a 914. And it's not like the 915 is the best trans Porsche ever made. Then there's the G50, but if you thought 915s were expensive ...

Good running 915 Carrera trans - 5k
Factory LSD - 2k
Wevo kit - 3k
Install - 1k
Internal oil system - 500
Shift tower - 200
Axles set - 500

All are approx prices but it adds up.

No labor in the parts tally. Shipping from various locations to gather and transport to the UK? That $ meter will spin up quickly. Makes the one prepped for a 914 a no brainer. Figure out a way around the VAT.

How much power is the 3.0 making? How much are you racing? What failed in the 901 trans?

You may consider upgrading the 901 trans and its cooling as an alternative. There is another thread on here about how much power a track 901 can take. Personally I have been using a 901 for occasional track use for a 260hp 3.2 for awhile. But if it was a dedicated race car it would need cooling upgrades, amongst other things.
