914's dominate Marina except that one tail dragger Options

Wow great course, tons of teeners and a perfect course for us. Nathan and Trekkor were 2nd and 3rd. Nathan was on the cords of his Hoosiers. Damn that was quick Nathan. No more burn outs for you!!! Trekkor has really improved his driving. Much smoother and he is starting to get fast!

Albert and I were battling it out with out 1.8s and he had a new set of Hoosiers. He won our class (BX) by less than half a second.

Thanks to Randal. Had my first instructor ride along since I started this silly sport and he taught me alot.

Nathan and Trekkor were in low 52 second range. I was about 2 seconds off the pace. Think there were at least 4 914's in top 10.

great day out at marina today, folks. although a highly autocross-prepped 911 stole the show, 914's filled the ranks after that.

trekkor's course featured a number of sweepers, two slaloms, a wicked hairpin, and a few *oddities* that made for a fairly technical and challenging course. really nice, fun, safe course with excellent flow. A LOT of people were having trouble finding an efficient line, including myself at first. thankfully, after randal kicked my ass about it, (thanks, randal) i stayed pretty consistent. super late apexes on damn near everything. lots of sections where you just had to 'give it up' in order to get your car positioned.

the big news this weekend is trekkor's serious AX progress as of late. guys: he is really getting better -- and staying consistent. he ended up just about a quarter of a second off my time. aside from perhaps Demick and I's battle a few months ago at Alameda, such close competition in Fm has not happened all season. congratulations, trekkor. i was having to really manage my tires today. in the AM, they just felt 'off'. sure enough, closer inspection revealed that two were corded. i moved these to the right side of the car (course was clockwise), which helped, but i just couldn't get the car to stick like i was used to. after the PM runs, all 4 tires were showing significant cord around the entire outer camber edge... needless to say, i drove about 10 fun-runs after that, trying to drift the entire course. hey -- now i've got steel-belt showing!

grant and albert had their own competition going. i got to drive albert's car and was really impressed with it's balance -- and somewhat less impressed with it's power... both of these guys are building up engines and will soon be top-5 contenders.

also got a ride in logan's super charged miata -- holy shit that thing rips. complete straight-line power wheel-spin through 2nd gear. torque. almost an 8000 rpm red line. neutral. driftable. i was screamin' like a schoolgirl. ride in this car and your V-8 mustang/camaro/whatever will forever feel like a pig.

Trekkor's course today was actually the best one he has designed to date. It flowed well, had lots of technical challenges and the worker positions were in the right places. Nice job Trekkor.

As Nathan said there was lot of places to get the lines wrong, and most people were, but our 914 crowd did a pretty good job.

My impressions for the day:

Instructing Grant and enjoying his ability to control his car. He is driving a 1.8 and his times reflect a much faster car. Good job Grant. Did you ever get a run where you didn't leave anything on the table?

When we were looking at Nathan's tires before he put them on in the morning it was clear he would be lucky to get 10 runs out of them as they were on the edge.

But as always it is a kick to run with Nathan as that car just goes like stink and Nathan likes to drive it at the limit, OK, maybe a bit over, but that is the way you get fast times...

I still feel he would do better with 23/24 lbs air pressure in the Hoosiers, but I guess I am the only one that believes lower pressures work better with these tires.

How did you end up doing Nathan? Every get a run where you didn't leave anything on the table?

I didn't get a chance to watch or run with any of the other guys as I had to leave by 11:00AM, but what little I got to do with our guys made my day.

The Marina is simply one of the best autoX venues on the planet.

Seen a white 914 on a trailer being pulled by a red dodge truck on the 1 out of Monterey at about 5pm today. I think it had the #s 786 or something like that. Was that any of you guys?

The competition between Nate and I was fierce.
We both started in the 54's and whittlede it down to the low 52's.
I'd beat him by 2 hundreth's and he'd come back and get me by 3.
I'd step up, and then he'd do one better.

Thanks again Randal you helped me see that course in a completely different way than I would have approached it. I had one run that was fairly clean and turned in a 54.2, but I gave up a little too much speed on that very slow 180 (that was a very tough corner on low powered cars). Never had a 100% clean run, but I was getting very close. Nice thing is that I constantly improved my times with each run in the afternoon session.

I was running 28 psi all around with my Hoosiers. I'll probably try 26 psi next AX just to see how it works for me.

I rode with Nathan in his car and I now understand why I cant get much closer than 2 seconds. That car has gobs more power out of the corners and Nathan knows how to use it.

Yes, do tell. Who was the 911? Dwight Mitchells old 911 is running at some Redwood Region events. It was the only autocross car that Porsche ever sponsored. Meticulous preparation. Very fast in the right hands.

my 52.0 was a very solid run for me. it's hard for me to imagine that i left much time out there during that run... although i think i had a high 51 on fresh tires.

i dropped my tire pressures to 24, randal, in the PM. it helped, but my impressions are probably skewed from driving on the cords.

Terry Zaccone is a GREAT driver -- better than me -- but he hasn't beaten me all season. car prep... the T&D car is FAST, and has a quite good driver, but i think it's not entirely out of the question that i could chase him down on a good day... you gotta have goals...

i'm glad you finally got to ride in my car, grant. power makes a difference, eh?

Yep if I had that kind of power and had a good day I might just be in the thick of things with you guys.

You need to drive my car sometime. I'd be interested in what you think about the current setup since you have been in a few more of the fast 914's than I have.

I'm still thinking my car could use 200 lb springs in the back. I forgot to ask Albert what he has for suspension setup in terms of springs and bars.
