Not much of an artist, so no threat to those that are (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

.....I was looking at my beautiful black Porcelain Porsche 914 that I bought from CAMP 914 products and got to wondering how collectibles are priced??

These are $60, yet in one of my latest magazines, they show an artist that is commanding $500 for something similar in shape, yet made of cast aluminum and with a run of 500 instead of 100.

ART is partly based on demand which comes either by dying or by becoming famous or "known".
914 collectables are not too far off from the basic rules of ART. Go around and break all other known examples of the Black 914's like yours so yours is the last known one and it will become "Rare" and worth more money.

Market value, Marketing, Art "experts" based one or all of: high quality, limited production, and high desirability.

I've paid $25 to over $1300 for Lladro porcelain figures (for my wife). There is a strong consistent demand for them.

On the other side, we purchased stuffed bears some for hundreds of dollars each that helped eBay boom years ago and now you can't give them away... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Always wondered about the same thing. I think it comes down to what a collectable is worth to you, My whole house is like a racing museum filled with racing artwork and memorabilla. I also think personally that collectables have to have the rarability feature. I mean how is anything NASCAR considered collectable, I think they make like 3 bilizion of everything. Rare is like an Alex Zanardi driver suit or a James Weaver helmet.

Put it on ebay starting at $0.01, with a reserve of $10,000.00. Be sure to state "low reserve". (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) Take the number you get when the auction ends and double it. Instant art appraisal! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

rare is Alex Zanardi driving shoes.

okay - tasteless joke...

i have no idea. personally, i've found it much more satisfying not selling $1000 paintings than $100 paintings.

my biggest problem is actually *shipping* items.
the standard carriers (UPS, FedEx) won't insure original art for much over $100 unless it is an appraised work from a known artist.

i shipped my last paintings as "engineering drawings" and was able to get the declared value up a bit - fortunately - there was no damage in transit. (i tend to be overprotective when i ship art...)

I was the one who commissioned the small porcelain models to me made. I have a friend in The Netherlands who knows the artist. He is the broker for his newest sculptures.

History - I had seen a large scale 914 model that was created for a European Club to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the 914. One day I mentioned these models to a friend I have in The Netherlands. He said that he knew the artist who created the models. I had him ask the artist if any were still available. None were, but he agreed to make a few more for me. I also learned that the artist had done some small 911 sculptures for another Porsche Club. I asked if he would consider doing a similar 914 for me.

Here are a couple of old threads about the porcelain models. #1, #2.

I took on Craig Laughlin as a partner to help pay for the production. Each of us has a very limited number of both the small and large models available to sell. The large one are $250 plus shipping. The small ones are $60 plus shipping. Our goal was to have a top quality artistic sculpture to honor the 914. We also wanted the price to be as affordable as possible. These pieces have been marketed only to our friends here at 914World.com.

What are they worth? As you see, other sculptures by this artist sell for much, much more. This was not a money making venture for us. In fact, we have not yet recouped our original investment. We did it out of our passion for 914's. Post here or send Craig or I an e-mail if you would like to purchase one of the few remaining limited edition sculptures.

Thanks for the info John....I forgot you had been involved with these..sorry (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif)

soooo, how is your model/waitress freind doing?? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif)

When I wrote the original post, I kinda figured the pricing was more based on letting people have the chance to own these instead of trying to jack up the price and try to make a bunch of money....besides the artists pricing for his own work must be based on him "having" to make some money in order to survive......

Hopefully with this post a few more will be rolling off your and Craigs shelf to a new happy customer (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)
