New to 914 world and looking to buy my first. O says it's a 76 with a 1.8l engine. I can't find where a 1.8 was used in 76.

How can I tell the true year and engine size?

Thanks for help!

the vin or chassis number is located in the front trunk, on the passengerside inner fender, near the shock mount (it is stamped into the sheetmetal there)
and there is a label on the windscreen post (on US cars)

Nah, there was about 25 1.8l 76 cars made. You would have to get a Cardex from Porsche to confirm that this is the original motor for this car and not something installed later. Lots of 76 cars motors were changed out as they ran so hot with the later HE's.

Geoff, where did you get that info? I've always been curious about the 76 1.8's status--were they real or myth? A local guy says he used to have one, but of course it's long sold...

Engine Numbers - Note the 76 1.8L

maybe this is where the myth started...the 76 1.8L shows 1971cc and lists it as the same as the 2.0?? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Thats AA for ya!

Covered it here on the BBS about a year ago....4075 2.0L were built and 25 1.8l cars were built for a total of 4100 76 cars.

Thats why you see the 4075 cars built vs the 4100 cars built. We all have seen the Vin # car of 4081 posted about a year ago.

Thanks for all the help guys... I get to see the car on Fri. morn.

So, if it is one of the few '76 1.8L, does the rarity help with value?

Only if it is in pristine condition it should help its value due to its rarity but then its a 1.8L which are worth less than a 2.0l.

in other words depends.............
