I'd be afraid squirting water over a hot head would result in a busted head... since the heads aren't made to cool like that...

It works..
someone will probably chime in, but I've never heard of a single head problem

I did it for a year or two and know of a dozen other people that have done it also....

one ancedotal would be that you don't hear of cracked heads everytime it rains.....

It works good for about 15 minutes

somebody needs to make a water cooled setup for a stock 914 engine.

There already is. It's called an inner tube filled with water in the trunk and a washer pump rigged up to spray water into the impeller. Cools nicely for about 15 minutes on continuous spray - so I've heard.

a few decent threads on this cooling method (with numbers) on the pelican site......I wouldn't worry about thermal shock unless you dumped a 5 gallon bucket of water on the heads all at once while at max. operating temp....

regarding the electric fan Idea.
I should have gotten pictures.
all of the AJRS cars run a 16 or so inch electric fan straight down onto the motors..

usually they have a 2nd small battery that runs in total loss mode for this fan.

This has been an AJRS standard for about 8 years now.
He runs them on the -6 motors too.
In fact a week ago at an event one of the fastest cars he has ever built had one on the 3.3 twin plug, electromotive, high compression motor (probably a 350hp engine)

He also ducts a roof naca into the engine bay, so your getting some good ram air cooling too.

and none of his cars run engine tin in race trim.

In fact when I was there on saturday he was showing me a dyno sheet on a PCA GT class 912. It runs a type IV motor with 195hp and 180ft/lbs at the wheels (@5000 foot of altitude)

so its definitely doable, but its really a race only setup.

Looks like the votes LEAN toward keeping engine tin on and there is no alternative at this time to it. I had to ask. Now I know. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif)

Well, jeeezzzz, you're no fun. You're SUPPOSED to argue with us and insist you're gonna go ahead anyway................................... The Cap'n, who has seen with hisveryowneyes the results of running an aircooled motor with no tin ..................
