Congratulations, Lance! I tried to buy a 914 when I was a senior in high school, back in 1982. They wanted $3,600 for it. I only had $3,000, so it was not to be. Very jealous of you! With your father being a Porsche guy, I am sure this will be the first of many Porsches for you in your life.

Oh, and one other thing: never, ever sell it. No matter what happens, you will ultimately regret selling it.

Very cool car and I agree with comment to never sell the car. I've owner over 50 cars and the only one I regret selling is the 1960 Karmen Ghia I had as a senior in high school. How about a photo of your 914 and your dad's 911, with you, your dad and your grandpa standing between them. I bet we would have a hard time guessing who has the biggest smile!

Looked through my photo collection and found some more on the 914 (and Dad's 911).

I had heard that dirt accumulated under the longs, and I had no idea if or when the PO removed them. I was greeted with about a pound of dirt on each side. Luckily both sides were solid. Both sides were given a coating of rust proofing to be safe.

The installed carpet was well worn, and I wanted to check the firewall, footwells, and floors for rust when I first got the car, so I stripped the interior and installed (Maybe too much) dynamat and new carpet while I was in there.

After stripping the interior, the passenger side tar mat was peeling up, so I wasn't sure if there was rust under there. Chiseled it all off, and was greeted with only mild surface rust so I got rid of all that and gave it a protective coating.

Dynamat Installed

New Carpet Kit Installed - I am pretty sure the kit was for a later model 914 with the shorter passenger footwell but I used spare carpet and covered the bare spot, you can kind of see it in the picture, and now it is barely noticeable.

Last photo for now, the only one I could find with my car and my Dad's in the garage. It's a 1970, but has steel flares and postdate bumpers for a 930 look. It's also got a 3.2 Carrera Engine. At the time it was the only manual car in the family, so it is also what I learned to drive stick in. (No Pressure!). Thankfully I did not grind any gears, although the starting on a hill lesson may have taken some life off his clutch!

Nice work - looks solid.
What did you use on the longs and the floors for protection - POR15?

I used a couple cans of POR15, after sanding the surface rust off.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Happy New Year indeed. Nice work there Lance. Wishing you many miles of enjoyment. My 914 was originally a 1.7. Plenty of spunk to have fun with.
So glad it looks like a solid car. Well done with the interior treatment.
It is very cool that Dad & Grandad are involved.
Best of luck!!!

When I get around to the interior of my car, I’ll be doing the same dynamat solution you’ve done.

After noticing the amount of play in my accelerator pedal, along with the annoying squeak every time I engaged the clutch, immediately went here to research solutions.

Found out pretty fast the nylon bushings disintegrate, and looked into my pedal cluster and saw a nylon graveyard. Bronze bushings were then ordered from Pelican.
Attached Image

Yesterday I removed the pedal cluster from the car and saw what a mess it was underneath. What I did not see was rust! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

After removing the cluster
Attached Image

After a quick clean
Attached Image

The cluster fully disassembled, after following Eric Shea's excellent write-up on rebuilding the pedal cluster. Ended up carefully drilling out the old roll pin holding the pedals to the base, because the hammer was not persuasive enough. Eventually got things free and I had a new pin anyways so no harm done.
Attached Image

Sanded and painted the base, gave everything a good clean, then went about replacing all of the what used to be nylon bushing with the new bronze ones. Everything got a healthy coat of silicone grease before going in.

Attached Image

Pretty happy with the result! Looks much better, and while you cant see it after the pedalboard and carpet are in, you sure can feel the difference. Each pedal feels miles smoother than before, and the play in the accelerator cable is all but gone.

Nice work getting your 914 in good condition. The pedal cluster rebuild will be a world of difference. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Hey Guys!!! Long time no update but I had been driving my car pretty much every day for the past couple years to and from around SLO and my internship in the North Bay until things went south.

People may have seen my post in the flatbed thread, but my engine grenaded itself and thus began the soul searching into my path forward.

I am still a college student, so although a full -6 swap would be amazing, budget is looking slim.

I thought about letting the car sit on the side yard of my parent's house, and biking everywhere. I've got enough bicycles where I could ride a new one every day of the week and still have leftovers. (This is what I get for being a bicycle framebuilder...)

Honestly, that is probably what would have happened if it wasn't for what continues to be unlimited generosity of the 914world community when fiacra reached out about some engines he had in storage that he was willing to sell to me at college student pricing.

I have bought one of his engines and will hopefully (with help) put it together and in my car. It is totally in pieces but the main unknown for me is actually the fuel injection. I installed carbs on my last engine, (which I still have) but would be very interested in setting up the factory fuel injection as I now possess what appears to be a pretty complete kit.

What are the reputable threads for fuel injection information, and does anyone know the best threads that document the process of putting in/together an engine step by step?

P.S. Pictures to come

Hey Lance, it was great to meet your dad today and I have my fingers crossed the engine works out. Keep me posted. We took a quick look together through the boxes of parts and hopefully everything you need is there. If not, hit me up and I'll see what I can find in my spare parts. Unlike the other engine I have this one definitely is "some assembly required" but it has promise. Things we know it needs, like a flywheel, clutch and fan can be salvaged from your blown engine. I might suggest you get it running with the carb setup you already have and then convert to FI once you have some time to go through all the components and fill in any gaps and make any repairs (like rebuilding the MPS, getting a new FI harness from Jeff, etc.). There is a learning curve for the D-Jet FI and you might spend some time on that journey before taking the plunge. I'd hate to see your car getting too comfortable on jackstands (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) . I don't have any threads to recommend, but if you haven't already explored Jeff Bowlsby's website you'll find a lot of resources there. He also, as I noted, makes new FI harnesses and having a well functioning FI harness is key to having a reliable system. I know you've also reached out to Chris (tygaboy) and there is no better person to have on your team. Looking forward to seeing you back on the road (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

@NotLance Hey Lance - As I mentioned, I can make room for you to work on your car here At The Red Barn. But I do have to warn you: every 914 that's shown up here without an engine in it has ended up, well, you know! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
But seriously, I'll have a spot ready for you and you're welcome to the QuickJacks and all my tools.

Maybe we also do a "work party" and invite folks over for a "lunch/help out as they can" sort of thing?

Once you zero in on a time frame, let me know and we can work up a plan.
